One old capital worth exploring in Sri Lanka is Anuradhapura. This used to be the capital of thte country until the 11th century AD. At that time, it wa one of the most durable centers of city life and political power in South Asia.
Famous for its ruins of the ancient Lankan people that have been well preserved, Anuradhapura is considered an important and blessed place for the Buddhists. It is here where visitors can experience a tranquil vacation as the place now is surrounded by monasteries that span more than 40 square kilometers.
In the Hindu legend, Anuradhapura is considered the capital of the Asura King Ravana in the Ramayana.
A great place to stay in the area is the Palm Garden Village Hotel. Situated on a 50 acre plot originally used for chena cultivation, the compound now boasts of a new forest with more than 500 huge trees and a botanical garden that features more than 2,000 young plants.
Kohomba trees that have a medicinal value also line up the pathways while some grow in clusters near the chalets.
To unwind and engage in some recreational activities, guests here have varied choices. They can take a dip in the pool which is one of the largest in the area, work out at the gym, play games at the gameroom, dine at the restaurant or enjoy some drinks at the bar or buy some souvenirs at the shop. And for a unique body pampering experience, the place to go to is the ayurveda and spa center inside the complex.
There’s also a Roman Catholic chapel where people can reflect and pray.
