A trip to any foreign land can prove to be a disaster when travelers get sick in the very place where they are supposed to be enjoying. Although there are general health guidelines that every traveler must observe, there are specific precautions that will have to be taken for certain countries. Here are some important health tips for travelers to Sri Lanka.
Consult with Doctor Before Scheduled Trip
Travelers need to consult with a medical professional about 4-6 weeks before the scheduled trip. This is to make sure that the traveler will not be surprised by an existing illness in the middle of the trip. Also, this is to make sure that the necessary vaccines and medicines have been addressed for proper protection.
There are routine vaccines required before being allowed entry to any country. Highly recommended for travelers visiting Sri Lanka are vaccines for Hepatitis A and Typhoid. This is especially useful for adventurous eaters. Other recommended vaccines include vaccines for Hepatitis B, Japanese Encephalitis, Malaria, Rabies, and Yellow Fever. There is currently no travel health notice in effect in Sri Lanka.
Stay Safe Outdoors
Staying safe outdoors comprise a lot of different aspects. It will involve eating and drinking safely, keeping away from animals, preventing bug bites, and reducing exposure to germs. Aside from the required vaccines, proper clothing and insect repellents are very important.
It is also quite sensible to stay away from animals especially the stray ones. Some can be very dangerous to be near with. It is also very important to take note of where to go to for medical services during emergency situations.
Secure Self and Personal Properties
It is highly sensible to keep one’s self and personal properties safe by observing general safety practices as well as safety precautions applicable to where travelers are actually staying. There is some difference for example between staying in a hotel in a high traffic place and staying in off-the-beaten path destinations in relation to security risks. It pays to be aware of what environment to expect.
Having suitable travel insurance is advantageous especially those that provide benefits and protection for travelers who get sick. Travelers must also have a ready contact card containing pertinent contact and special health information, when applicable. It is a safe practice to undergo medical check-up upon arriving home just to be sure that there are no undetected diseases obtained while on travel.
