Retirement conjures visions of peace, relaxation, and comfort and why not? After working for so many years, earning a living, raising a family, and preparing for the future, people deserve to have something to look forward to. For many people, that something is retirement and Sri Lanka presents one of the most ideal physical conditions that will make retirees happy for the rest of their lives.
There are several criteria which retirees look for when looking for a country to spend their golden years in. Three main reasons easily come to mind why you should consider Sri Lanka in your possible choices. Aside from its natural beauty and its safe environment, the country is also retirement friendly.
Retirement Friendly
The Sri Lankan government has provided for a clear way in which foreign nationals can enjoy an extended stay in the country through its “My Dream Home Visa Programme“. This is a program that is open to foreign nationals who are 55 years old and above. A specific amount needs to be deposited in an approved bank in Sri Lanka. A minimum monthly remittance will also be required.
Subject to submission of documentary requirements and fulfillment of other requirements, qualified foreign nationals can be granted a 2-year renewable residence visa. The visa holder is not allowed to work while under the program. A suitable medical insurance policy must also be valid during the stay.
Safe Environment
Sri Lanka offers safe living to its citizens and foreign visitors. There is almost no record of violent crime specifically against foreign nationals. With sensible practices in going about the country, people can peacefully explore and live in the country.
Like in any other places, there are petty crimes committed in random. Some scams that appear to target less than careful foreign nationals are also known to exist. In general though, Sri Lankans are honest, polite, and friendly.
Beautiful Scenery and Culture
Sri Lanka boasts of at least 8 World Heritage Sites which proves just how interesting the country is when it comes to physical beauty. Most retired expatriates prefer the hill country in Kandy or the southwestern coast in Galle although there are other possible options to consider. Foreign ownership of lands is subject to applicable laws.
Clearly, Sri Lanka is able to offer a retirement haven to retirees. It has provided ways in which they can enjoy their stay without complicated processes. Moreover, the welcoming feel has never been more evident than now.
